Fearless Leader

I am now the FRG leader for Dan's platoon. What is an FRG you civilians might be asking yourselves? It stands for "Family Readiness Group." Essentially what an FRG is supposed to do is be an information link between the soldiers and the families. They are supposed to support the families by enabling them to help themselves. This can happen in many different ways from giving them a phone number to the local lactation office for a breastfeeding mother, to meeting with them for lunch and telling them about programs and organizations that the post and local area has to offer if they have just moved. Sometimes it is helping a brand new military wife to "learn the ropes." Also, when the guys deploy the FRG usually meets once a month to show videos that have been made by the guys, to catch up on things that they can do to help the guys and make sure that everyone is ok. It is really important when you are in Iraq to know that your family has a good, strong support system at home.
For those of you in the family that know how much I hated the FRG at Fort Campbell it might come as a complete surprise to find me the leader of the FRG here. The problem with Fort Campbell was that the FRG was basically one big gossip group and they weren't informative or helpful to anyone that really needed them. Which is exactly why I volunteered myself for the job here. Of course this is a much smaller scale FRG than I was dealing with back at Campbell (it represented several platoons, not just one). I want to make sure that it doesn't happen again.
Anyhow, that is the newest news here in Washington. Not very interesting, but thought I would share. Hope everyone is having a great week!!
