The Plan:
Take a board, cover it in magnetic paint first and then in chalkboard paint, hang on door going from kitchen into laundry/mudroom to leave notes for hubby and hang granddaughter pictures. Thought this would kill two birds with one stone.
Review:
Bought magnetic paint, it says to put on 2-3 coats....hmmm...wrong. LIARS! I had to use the WHOLE can to get the magnets to stick. So don't be fooled that you will get several projects out of this one can. I am not saying this isn't a good product to use...it will just take you the WHOLE can if you are doing a large board.
Now these little gems, the chalkboard markers... a wonderful product. No chalkboard dust....yippee! Do they work on the magnetic/chalkboard that I did...not so much.
See the explanation point....that was put on with a chalkboard marker but this picture is "after" I wiped it off. I had to repaint with chalkboard paint to cover up what was previously written using the markers. (it is rough because of the metal in the magnetic paint but still writable)Here is my new message board...love it.
On the counter over to the right is my first chalkboard w/o magnetic paint. Here I can use the chalkboard markers just fine.
The after math of using regular chalk on your board and wiping it off with an eraser. Yup, chalkboard dust.
1. Magnetic paint has to be put on using multiple coats...NOT 2-3
2. If you want a magnetic board and chalkboard all in one, might I suggest that you buy some sheet metal for where you want your magnets and the rest use chalkboard paint.
3. Use chalkboard markers ONLY on chalkboards with NO magnetic paint
4. And those with magnetic paint....well it is old school...the dreaded stick of chalk.

Looks good.
Thanks for the review Cheri. I'll keep your suggestions in mind when I do my chalkboard in the playroom for the kids to play on.
Great review, and super cute door!! I love the idea - but the high maintenance of it scares me.
And I've never heard of chalk markers - but I like the idea of no dust!
The door looks great....and a great place for Mabry to draw on when she visits....
Sounded like a lot of work, but it was worth it - looked good and finally worked!
Happy St. Patty's day.

Your new message area looks great!
As I was reading this though, I was thinking that buying the sheet metal would probably work better too.
I find that even the chalk markers don't work that great with the chalkboard paint. Maybe it's just my chalkboard that I made?
