Appliance paint

We needed a refrigerator for our Ga house and so on Labor day we started looking.

We went to a couple of places that advertised scratch and dent. Oh there were dents!

So we decided to go to Fry's electronics and see what they might have and if we could find a great Labor Day sale...but then we spied Sears..

Sears has always been good to us so we by passed Fry's and headed to sears.

there she was... but WHITE! AKKK! I need black or stainless to go with everything else. It was brand spankin new, still with the wrappings on it but discontinued and it was a "SCREAMING" and I mean "SCREAMING" deal, so we bit the bullet and bought her. She looks just like the one up top but white.

Why not try "appliance paint." I have heard that it really works.

Got the paint, taped off the interior...went to work on it (or rather hubby did) and then I heard the cussing. The paint was leaving dull and shiny spots. What??? We wiped it down with Acetone...we shook the can...it was a mess.

Next day I went to Home Depot and asked them what to do. They said we did everything right and so they suggested Magic Eraser, who would have thought and very very fine sand paper (hubby's idea and they agreed). So I got all that plus disposable gloves and more paint.

Tried Magic Eraser...nothing. Sanded it...nothing. So I decided to wait it out and do it later when it wasn't so hot (but it was still in the temperature range that the can said we could paint, just in case you thought I painted in temps too high).

Trust me...later didn't seem to matter. So on to the doors.

Crap! Even though we taped off the interior, the fine (and I do mean fine) over spray got underneath and I had black paint on the gaskets. So I spent a few hours using mineral spirits cleaning that up and now the interior looks just fine. Whew!

Next day I called the number on the Appliance paint can and they said we did everything right and they couldn't imagine what could have possibly happened. I asked if there was a black paint in a can (not a spray paint) that could be used and he said that we could try black gloss enamel paint for metal with an oil base, it would not be as hard as the appliance paint which is an epoxy but harder than regular water soluble paint. He also suggested that we wait a week to do this and use either a short nap roller or a sponge roller.

So yesterday and today I rolled on black gloss enamel paint for metal and it looks so much better if you can believe that. Oh that's right...you didn't see the before pictures and sorry about that but I was too embarrassed. Just take my word for it...it was a disaster.

Would I use Appliance paint again...not on your life.

tune in Tomorrow for my over spray account...

Wish you would have included photos so we could have seen it before, during and after.

I would love to have seen the before and after photos. I will take your word on the paint. I had a faux finish done on my kitchen cabinets - huge mistake. I would have been much better off if I had saved and had them replaced.
